Fueling the Backcountry: Why Most Freeze-Dried Meals Miss the Mark
Share
It’s the end of a long day in the mountains.

Your legs are smoked from climbing. Your pack is finally on the ground. The light is fading behind the ridge and the temperature is starting to drop. You pull out your stove, boil water, and reach for the meal that’s supposed to refuel you for tomorrow.
But instead of feeling restored, you feel… heavy.
Too much sodium. Too much sugar. Too many fillers. Not enough real nutrition to recover from a day of climbing, packing weight, and burning thousands of calories.
For years, this has been the tradeoff in the backcountry: convenience over quality.
Most freeze-dried meals were designed for shelf life and calories — not for hunters, backpackers, and mountain athletes who actually rely on food to perform day after day in rugged terrain.
At Alchemy Outdoors, we believed there had to be a better way.
So we started asking a simple question:
What would a backcountry meal look like if it were designed for performance first?
That question is what led to the creation of our MRG meals, built with clean ingredients, balanced nutrition, and the kind of fuel your body actually needs when you’re miles from the trailhead.

At Alchemy Outdoors, everything we build starts close to home.
Our knives and MRG meals are made with the same mindset we take into the backcountry: quality, purpose, and respect for the community around us.
When you support Alchemy Outdoors, you’re not just buying gear or meals. You’re helping support local makers, small businesses, and the outdoor culture that makes Idaho special.
In this blog post, we’re sharing:
• Meals currently in stock
• New flavors coming soon
• Four local businesses we’re proud to highlight
Thanks for being part of the journey.

Idaho Sportsman’s Show Recap
Last week we had the opportunity to spend a few days at the Idaho Sportsman’s Show, and it was an incredible experience.
By the end of the show, we completely sold out of meals, something we’re incredibly grateful for. But even more meaningful than the sales were the conversations.
We had the chance to connect with new customers discovering Alchemy Outdoors for the first time, catch up with old friends, and hear directly from hunters, backpackers, and outdoor athletes about how they’re fueling their time in the mountains.
One thing became clear throughout the weekend:
There’s a real demand for clean, performance-focused backcountry meals.
Hearing people’s reactions, feedback, and stories from the field confirmed something we’ve believed from the start: these meals are filling a gap in the backcountry food space.
To everyone who stopped by the booth, shared a story, or picked up a meal to try on their next trip, thank you!

Local Brands We’re Proud to Work With
One of the best parts of building Alchemy Outdoors is the opportunity to work alongside talented people right here in our community. We’re proud to collaborate with and support these local businesses:
EXO Mountain Gear
Based in Boise, EXO Mountain Gear builds some of the best hunting packs in the industry. Their packs are designed, tested, and built for serious time in the mountains, and their commitment to quality mirrors the same backcountry mindset we value.
LAZERGRFX — Colby Dees
Colby specializes in custom print and laser-engraved goods. He’s the craftsman behind our Alchemy Outdoors snapbacks and soft goods, bringing our brand to life with precision and attention to detail.
Old Oakwood Design — Bart Carrico
Bart creates beautiful custom woodworking pieces, including the open-faced knife blocks used in our kitchen sets. His work blends function and craftsmanship in a way that perfectly complements handmade tools.
PhotoBravo — Adam Haynes
Adam curates stunning imagery that captures our meals and tools in their natural environments. His photography helps tell the story of Alchemy Outdoors the way it’s meant to be seen — out in the wild.
Supporting local makers and creators is part of what makes this community strong, and we’re grateful to work alongside people who take pride in what they build.
Yours In Adventure,
The Alchemy Outdoors team
